What is a labor doula?

A Doula is a person who attends the birthing family before, during, and just after the birth of the baby. The certified doula is trained to deliver emotional support from home to hospital, ease the transition into the hospital environment and be there through changing hospital shifts and alternating provider schedules. The doula serves as an advocate, labor coach, and information source to give the mother and her partner the added comfort of additional support throughout the entire labor. There are a variety of titles used by women offering these kinds of services such as "birth assistant," "labor support specialist" and "doula”.

  • 1-2 prenatal meetings (will depend on when you hire your doula, your schedule and preferences)

  • Personalized information and discussion on topics important to YOU in your pregnancy.
  • FREE extensive lending library of books and videos on pregnancy, massage, birth, breastfeeding, parenting and natural living.
  • Birth plan consultation – helping you develop your Birth Preferences List to share with your care provider and birthplace staff.
  • Support of whatever birthing method you choose.
  • Support in Hypnosis techniques for those using Hypnobabies, Hypnobirthing, Hypbirth, etc. including practice if you choose.
  • Review and support in relaxation, positions, visualization, and breathing skills useful for labor
  • Telephone and Email support during pregnancy
  • On-call 24-hours a day from 36 weeks to 6 weeks postpartum
  • Support and special notes for dad and/or other support people
  • Unlimited support from the moment you call and say “It’s time” until you are breastfeeding and settled after the birth. Assistance with the “first latch” and Kangaroo care.
  • Use of our “doula tools”. Each doula’s tools will vary but may include a birth ball, aromatherapy, music, massagers, etc. Ask your doula what’s in her bag!
  • Assistance with pictures and video during labor and birth.
  • Complete back-up team system in case of doula schedule conflict. You will have someone to answer questions, attend to you and meet your needs at all times.
  • 1 postpartum visit to review the birth, assist with breastfeeding, new baby concerns and of course admire the beautiful baby!
  • Breastfeeding information and support. Referral to our private staff lactation consultant (IBCLC) if necessary (extra fee applies).
  • FREE attendance at as many Babies, Bellies and Brunch events as you like during your pregnancy.
  • Discounts on other 9 Months & Beyond, LLC services like childbirth and parenting classes.

A 9 Months & Beyond, LLC doula offers non-judgmental support and encouragement, valuing the “birth” of an empowered, confident mother over a specific birthing outcome.
